Ram rider Rich “Payner” Payne’s recent display of consistency at the Jersey and Guernsey champs won him both titles. Here’s what he had to say about the events.
“The first one was 2 weeks ago and were the Jersey DH champs on July 18/19th. The track was super short but fast and tech at the same time, with practice staying pretty dry in the morning the heavens soon opened an there were torrential rain in the afternoon making the track ultra slippy. times were pretty far apart an from me to second place there were a 14 second gap as I were loving riding in the wet.”
“The Guernsey DH champs were at the weekend just gone and again with heavy rain on Saturday it was shaping up to be another real slippy muddy track but luck shone through an as we woke up on Sunday it was nice an sunny an although the track were still pretty wet it was drying up. Practice went god an i was feelin’ confident so in qualifying i took it steady an came in 3rd 4 seconds down on the leader but knew i could make up time on the pedally section at the bottom. Come race time the track was drying out even more an despite the thick mud higher up on the track it took the spikes of to make up some time on the pedally lower half an it payed off as i came down 5 seconds quicker which was enough to take home the win. YAY”
Rich was riding his Ram FR which proved the perfect machine for the short and technical courses.
